Barthel Beham learned his trade from his older brother, Hans Sebald Beham and also Albrecht Durer. He began his active career as an miniaturist engraver. He was also fascinated with ancient art and may have worked with Marcantonia Raimondi in Bologna and Rome. Beham was banished from Lutheran Nuremberg along with Georg Pencz in 1525 for not believing in baptism, Christ, or transubstantiation. He then moved to Catholic Munich and worked for the Bavarian dukes, William IV and Ludwig X. Beham established himself as a portraitist and was sought out by important clientele such as Emperor Charles V. He died in Italy while on a trip under the patronage of Duke William.
